Three ACS Nano publications on graphene based materials

On 28th of January 2013 the European Commission has decided to invest 1,000 million EUR over 10 years into a Graphene FET flagship initiative focused on R&D in the field of graphene materials. The mission of EU is to take a graphene and related layered materials from academic laboratories to society, revolutionize multiple industries and create economic growth and new jobs in the European Union.

Dr. Boštjan Genorio and Dr. Barbara Novosel, researchers from University of Ljubljana Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology (FCCT), and Centre of Excellence for Low-Carbon Technologies (CoE LCT) are among those active in the field of the graphene materials. Together with collaborators from Rice University they have published three ACS Nano papers (impact factor 11.4). In these publications researchers presented a new method for preparation of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) from commercially available multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and in-situ selective functionalization of GNRs. The advantage of these developed methods is the fact that cheap industrial scale-up is possible. Selective functionalization of prepared materials greatly improves processability while electrical, mechanical and thermal properties are preserved. Possible fields of application are catalysis, polymer composites, transparent touch screens, ultracapacitors, batteries, coatings, drilling fluids, etc.
